The Continental Divide is the land feature running generally north and south along the Rocky Mountains that determines which way water will flow, either into the Pacific or Atlantic Oceans.
If two drops of rain or snow fall within an inch of each other on the Divide, one will eventually reach the Pacific Ocean, thousands of miles distant from the other when it reaches the Atlantic. Of course, we generally find the highest peaks and most jagged terrain at the Divide. One can cross the Divide by vehicle over Trail Ridge Road in the Summer, or by snowmobile (as we do) in the winter at Milner Pass next to Poudre Lake.
